Getting Started

Preparing for an FAA Class II or III medical exam involves a few key steps to ensure a smooth and successful process. Our step-by-step guide will help you navigate the aviation medical exam process.

Getting Started with FAA Medical Examinations

Learn about pre-exam requirements like completing the FAA MedXPress application, how to schedule your appointment with NH FLIGHT MD, and what to expect when it comes to receiving your results after the exam.

Why Do I Need an FAA Medical Exam?

A Requirement to Fly

Class II and Class III pilots are required to undergo the FAA medical certificate exam to ensure they meet the physical and mental health standards necessary for safe flight operations. These exams assess key health factors, including vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and overall fitness, to reduce the risk of medical emergencies during flight.

By maintaining these standards, the FAA helps safeguard the safety of pilots, passengers, and the general public.

Complete the FAA MedXPress Application

FAA MedXPress is a web application pilots must use to submit their certification applicant information for the FAA Form 8500-8. You’ll need a valid e-mail address to create a MedXPress account to use FAA MedXPress.

To obtain a medical certificate, you need to be examined by an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner. Follow these steps to apply for and receive your certificate prior to your appointment with NH FLIGHT MD:

  1. Complete and submit the MedXPress application for FAA Form 8500-8.

  2. Schedule an appointment with an AME, such as NH FLIGHT MD.

  3. Contact us with your MedXPress number the day before your appointment.

  4. If you have any medical conditions or take medication, contact us before your appointment to find out which medical records you should bring.

  5. During your appointment, we will conduct the medical examination and finish the remaining sections of the FAA application. If you meet the medical standards, we will issue your medical certificate.

Gather Relevant Medical Documentation

If you have a medical condition that could impact your certification (e.g., diabetes, heart conditions, or prior surgeries), bring documentation from your healthcare providers.

Be sure to include recent test results, physician reports, and details about any treatments or medications you’re currently taking.

Bring Necessary Items to Your Appointment

MedXPress confirmation number: You’ll need to provide this number the day before your appointment so that we can review your medical information in advance.

Government-issued photo ID: Ensure it’s valid and matches the name on your MedXPress application.

Corrective lenses or hearing aids (if applicable): Bring any assistive devices needed for vision or hearing testing.

Medications list: Write down all medications you currently take, including dosages and reasons for use.

Payment: If you book online or through another method, you may pay at our office with cash, credit card, or check on the day of your appointment.

Know What to Expect During Your Exam

FAA medical exams are designed to ensure you’re fit to fly while keeping the process straightforward and efficient. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

Review Your Medical History

You’ll complete FAA Form 8500-8, which includes questions about your medical history. Please bring a list of any medications you’re currently taking and details about previous medical treatments, if applicable.

Conduct a Physical Examination

The physical exam includes:

  • Vision test: For visual acuity, peripheral vision, and color vision.

  • Hearing test: To ensure you can hear normal conversation or tones at required levels.

  • Blood pressure and pulse check: To assess cardiovascular health.

  • General physical exam: To evaluate overall fitness for flying.

Evaluate Additional Requirements
Depending on your age or specific medical conditions, additional evaluations or documentation may be required. We’ll guide you through these steps to ensure compliance with FAA standards. If any concerns arise during the exam, we’ll discuss them with you and outline any additional steps or documentation required.

Post-Exam Results & Complete FAA Certification

If you meet all FAA standards, we will typically issue your medical certificate at the end of your appointment. If there are issues requiring further review, your application may be deferred to the FAA. We’ll help guide you on next steps, including providing any additional documentation.
